Safety Nets

At half past two in the afternoon, the cafeteria is almost empty. I walk up to the counter, scan the menu board perfunctorily and before I can even decide, the man behind the counter, complete with the chef's cardboard hat, mouths, "Cheese Sandwich and Watermelon juice, ma'm?" He is so in tune with my daily fare.
I have no escape now. "Yeah", I nod with a smile. He is amused at my amusement. Its our private joke.
Maybe tomorrow I'll order something less safe. Maybe...
I need a safety net of time tested, perfect choices. Ones that will never go wrong.
Like meaningless cups of coffee, cheese sandwich, watermelon juice, friends, marks, phone calls, text messages, chat windows, nostalgic sentimental blog posts, local trains, short hair, Ayn Rand, philosophy, pretense detachment, defensiveness, judgments, shroud of interpretation... and... lists. :-)
After all, what if I order that "weird looking" dish and don't like it? Might as well sail known waters, day after day.
Right? Right.

Hi Meera,

I just stumbled upon this blog and felt very much captivated by the feel. Congrats.

Now for the comment on this post. ever heard the phrase, 'A ship in a harbour is safe; But that's not what ships are built for.' its true in everything in our life. if we dont try anything new, there wouldnt be anything we can term as adventurous in our life. Bcos, every dawn is new.. every day is new... let everything in our life be that way too... :-)

safety nets or rigid mindsets? does one need to break away? or, rejoice in the safe monotony?

Excellent! You have transformed your post altogether :)

maybe.. its not a safety net.. its something like "being dependable" or "learning from the past". Thats something we all do in varying proportions and measures.. dont we?

Anand.. A ship is not built to be anchored in the 'safe' harbour..
but then, you dont build the ship with any kind of wood and in any shape.. do you? maybe, its the title thats misleading...

I agree with you Joey... even then, "Learning for the past" how does that translate? Its "Learning (new) from the past" Its what AI and neural networks are about... adding a new set of "values" and making it part of the experience. they emulate human mind. We learn (new) things and adapt and "term" them as safety nets.

Of course, its safe to stick to safety nets, but how do u develop a safety net? only by trying something new, isnt it? :-)

So, does the realization of meaninglessness of things bring a loss of hope, a question to the purpose of life, or does the meaninglessness spawn from a loss of hope, a question to the purpose of life ?

Separately, I have read that to see the uselessness of hope doesn't mean you should loose hope(K).

Two Things:

One: Your safety net is akin to a drop of india ink in a cup of water.

Two: You have never ever stopped at half past two - never, ever.
